THE KING OF POP

few weeks back, our world lost a legend. the ubiquitous Michael Jackson, arguably the greatest entertainer (ever) to grace the stage. 13 Grammy awards, 13 number one singles, a mind-whopping 750 million records sold and a slew of awards/records behind. his album, thriller, generated a superlative 104 million albums alone. putting numbers into perspective, our very own mandarin pop star, jay chou, has sold a combined 25 million albums, only. The Beatles and Elvis Presley are the only artists that surpass him (both are tied at 1 billion each). in my opinion, his departure signaled the end of the superstar era.

i remember my first encounter with him, or rather, his music. i was a relatively young kid, 7 or 8 years of age, and my dad had just bought his music video. back in 1997, crystal-clear scenes could only be found on laser disc (yes, LD, those gargantuan flying saucers with diameters bigger than your head). video tapes produced mediocre stuff. anyway, that was my first glimpse of mr jackson. i remember a scene, where he was in a stadium and there were kids surrounding him and a blown-up earth in the centre. i was flabbergasted. what magical planet was that. haha. it wasn't until much later that i realised it was a concert held at superbowl, usa, 1994. michael was performing "heal the world".

my mum however, takes a certain dislike towards MJ. to her, he is one hell of an eccentric musician, in particular, his crotch-grabbing antics.
